Drink as much as you like and never get drunk? Probably not.

When people find out that I’m a DUI defense attorney in Denver, they often ask if there truly are ways to beat a breath test or a blood test in a drunk driving case.  The simplest way, obviously, is to not be intoxicated while operating a motor vehicle.  The topic of this post deals with whether there are mechanisms that will actually prevent intoxication after drinking a large quantity of alcoholic beverages.
Many people including Jim Koch, the founder of the Boston Beer Company (maker of Samuel Adams beer), have suggested that consuming one teaspoon of active yeast culture per one pint of beer or other alcoholic beverage will actually break down the alcohol in the stomach BEFORE it is absorbed into the bloodstream.  The scientific evidence behind this idea appears to be divided.  While it is certainly possible for the yeast to break down the alcohol, the question is whether the yeast can do so in the acidic environment of the stomach.  After researching the scientific literature, I have been unable to find any strong evidence that this notion will work.  To be clear, you SHOULD NOT attempt to drive after consuming too much alcohol.
