New Colorado law makes prosecuting vehicular homicide easier
Every July 1, multiple new laws go into effect in Colorado after having been passed by the last legislature. Of note here is an increase to the statute of limitations (SOL) for the prosecution of vehicular homicide cases. Vehicular homicide is essentially a DUI accident resulting in the death of another. The SOL deals with the length of time in which law enforcement has to investigate an alleged crime and bring charges against a defendant. The previous SOL was five years. The new law doubles that to ten years. This additional time will allow attorneys with the District Attorney's offices throughout Colorado the ability to bring charges against "cold cases" of DUI resulting in death.
